What Is Executive Functioning Coaching? A Guide for Parents

The term executive functioning comes up frequently in school settings—but what does it really mean?

Executive functioning refers to a set of mental skills we all use to manage our daily lives. These include planning, focus, memory, and emotional regulation. When students struggle with these skills, it can impact their performance in school and everyday tasks.

At BrainStorm Tutoring, our executive functioning coaching program is designed to help students build these essential skills—and feel confident while doing it. Let’s break down three of the most important executive functions and explore strategies to strengthen them.

1. Self-Control: Think Before You Act

Self-control helps students stop and think before reacting. A student who struggles in this area may:

  • Interrupt frequently or blurt out
  • Struggle to stay seated
  • Act impulsively during structured moments
  • Need multiple reminders to stop a behavior

Strategy to Improve Self-Control:
Try the “Count to 10” method. Encourage the student to count silently to ten before speaking or reacting. This short pause builds self-awareness and allows the student to listen and respond more thoughtfully.

🧠 Goal: For the student to independently regulate their actions in different environments.

2. Emotional Control: Managing Feelings with Confidence

Emotional control allows students to regulate their feelings and stay on track with their goals. Students needing support in this area might:

  • Overreact to minor challenges
  • Struggle with taking feedback
  • Experience frequent mood swings
  • Have emotional outbursts

Strategy to Improve Emotional Control:
Introduce the “Breathe 3, Say 3” method:

Take 3 slow breaths, counting silently.

Say 3 things that are causing frustration or stress.

This technique brings students back to a calm state and encourages reflection and communication.

🧠 Goal: For the student to voice their emotions clearly and navigate challenges with resilience.

3. Planning, Time Management & Organization

These interconnected skills help students manage tasks, set goals, and stay organized. A student needing executive functioning coaching in this area might:

  • Lose track of materials
  • Forget homework or supplies
  • Feel overwhelmed by larger assignments
  • Have poor time awareness

Strategy to Improve Organization:
Help the student create a personalized system they enjoy using. Options include:

  • A physical planner
  • Google Classroom tools
  • Organization apps on a phone or tablet

The key is engagement—if the student doesn’t like the system, they won’t use it.

🧠 Goal: For the student to manage their own schedule, tasks, and materials with increasing independence.
