SAT or ACT: Which Test Is Right for You?

With colleges and universities across the U.S. now accepting either the SAT or ACT without preference, students and parents often ask the same question:
Which test should my child take?

If you’re starting your SAT test prep or ACT test prep journey, this guide will help clarify the key differences between the two exams so you can make the best choice.

Test Format and Timing

SAT:

  • Starts with a 65-minute reading section—a challenge for those who aren’t early risers.
  • Total duration: about 3.5 hours, including breaks.
  • Includes two math sections—one where a calculator is allowed, and one where it’s not.

ACT:

  • Begins with a 45-minute English (grammar) section, which may feel gentler first thing in the morning.
  • Slightly shorter in overall duration than the SAT.
  • Has one math section where calculator use is permitted throughout.
  • Includes a Science section—but don’t worry! It doesn’t test biology or chemistry knowledge. Instead, it assesses your ability to interpret charts, graphs, and data.

SAT vs ACT Scheduling

Both tests are held on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m., and each is offered seven times per year:

SAT Dates:
March, May, June, August, October, November, December

ACT Dates:
February, April, June, July, September, October/November, December

Whether you’re building an SAT prep or ACT prep calendar, it’s important to register early and plan around your academic schedule.

College Application Strategy: A Key Tip

If your student is applying to highly competitive schools that require SAT Subject Tests, here’s a valuable tip:

Many of those schools will accept ACT scores instead of the SAT + Subject Tests.

So if you want to lighten your test load while still applying to top-tier programs, ACT prep may be the smarter route.

Grammar and Scoring

Both tests have grammar sections, emphasizing key topics like punctuation and transition words.

Scoring differences:

SAT: Average score ~1060 (Perfect score = 1600)

ACT: Average score ~20 (Perfect score = 36)

Understanding scoring is an important part of both SAT prep and ACT prep, especially when setting goals for improvement.

Which Test Should You Take?

Here’s a quick recap to guide your decision:

Struggle with long reading passages? → Lean ACT

Excel in data interpretation and charts? → Try ACT

Prefer structured math sections and tougher reading upfront? → Go SAT

Looking to skip Subject Tests? → ACT may offer more flexibility

No matter which test you choose, consistent SAT prep or ACT prep will give you the confidence and skills you need to succeed.
